Baltimore proposes legislation for police body cameras

As anyone who regularly reads the headlines can attest to, police brutality has increasingly become a problem in not only Maryland, but throughout the United States. More and more often, it seems, those who are supposed to serve and protect citizens are instead caught in scandals that show them inflicting undeserved cruelty on members of the public. Some victims are left with lifelong physical and emotional scars, while others have tragically lost their lives.

Some state and city governments have taken measures to put a stop to this unacceptable problem. Recently, WBAL TV reported that the Baltimore City Council brought up the possibility of new legislation that would require members of the city police department to wear body cameras. This requirement could potentially protect citizens and police officers alike.

Police cruelty becoming a disturbing national trend

Law enforcement may cite using necessary force in drug arrests or other charges when they attempt to defend violations committed against the public. Many of these instances have been caught on camera. In one recent example, a Baltimore police officer was caught on surveillance camera harassing and beating a man standing outside a liquor store. The officer in question was placed on paid leave while his superiors investigated his actions.

It remains to be seen whether a law requiring police officers to wear cameras will protect more Baltimore residents from being unnecessarily injured by police or have an impact on complaints against law enforcement. The hearings regarding the legislation are set to begin in October.
